MOTOR MIKE RUNS FOR CONGRESS...Arizona that is. It was such a beautiful day to ride, our planned short day turned into almost 400 miles. We decided to go ahead and ride down to Congress, Arizona, an almost 250 mile jaunt through Flagstaff, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott, plus others. Not to say a whole lot, but Jerome is a strange town. What a great ride through Oak Creek Canyon, with numerous twisties, and scenery to beautiful to explain. My son Brandon mentioned that if I had the chance to ride this road, to make sure I did. He wasn't wrong!! Brandon was the whole reason for this approximately 500 mile detour to Congress. I was intrigued to ride the road that he was riding at the time of his accident 2 years ago. We gassed up at the same convenience store as he and his friends did that afternoon, almost exactly two years ago. It was a very emotional day, but I'm glad I did it. Our family is just VERY blessed that one of the memorials in the picture doesn't belong to Brandon.
Shortly after arriving in Sedona, on the way down to Congress, the KLR started overheating. I determined shortly after that the cooling fan was not operating. As long as I was at highway speeds it did fairly well, but it didn't like the long climbs in the mountains and the towns. Shortly after arriving at our motel tonight, the parking lot became my shop. I disassembled the bike, first checking the fuse, which looked good at first glance. I continued to take the bike apart, finally removing the tank to check the fan relay. Nothing I tried seemed to be working, so I changed the fuse, and the fan immediately came on. The fuse looked like vibration had overcome it, as there was no discoloration of any kind, just one small hairline crack. It's hard to believe a fuse would only survive 41,000 miles of vibration. I reassembled the bike under the light of a flashlight, and I'm hopeful the problem is solved.
Tomorrow we're headed North and then West.
Stay tuned for day #4.
